What is Orthobiologics?

Regenerative Medicine is changing the way we practice orthopedic medicine. For decades orthopedic specialist, surgeon and non-surgeon physicians used traditional treatment modalities to help patients suffering from joint or musculoskeletal problems.

Most of those initial treatment options should continue to be implemented as the first line treatment. Treatments like physical therapist, functional movement improvement, anti-inflammatory, activity modification, injections and when those options fail to provide relief surgery can be considered.

A revolutionary treatment is booming in the last couple of years, this is the field of Regenerative medicine. Regenerative medicine involves using cell, proteins and biological treatments to further advance medical treatments. Many scientist and physicians, including myself believe, the future of medicine revolves around understanding and implementing this field into different specialties.

We have already seen some incredible early positive results of regenerative medicine in conditions like stroke, diabetes, heart failure, COPD, Alzheimer’s Disease and many other.  I will concentrate on this blog in regenerative medicine and orthopedics.

Regenerative Medicine when is apply to orthopedics is referred to as Orthobiologics, this new concept is creating a paradigm shift on how we treat musculoskeletal problems. The 2 big cellular/biologics treatment that are primarily being used in Orthobiologics, Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) and Platelets Rich Plasma (PRP).

These biologicals treatments are being used to help the body repair suffering joints, ligament, muscles and tendons. We have also used these treatments to augment and improve the outcome of surgeries.

Because of the improvement in our treatments and by giving the patients better outcomes, orthobiologics is one of the fastest growing field in medicine.
